NQC has sent out a survey about moving the National Quartet Convention to Indianapolis, IN. Would you be more likely, less likely to attend there or do you want no change?

The location really doesn't make a difference to our family. Lord-willing, we'll be attending whether they move to Indianapolis or stay in Louisville.

I voted for no change. I think it would be poor judgment on NCQ's part to move to a city that favors one side of the country. People come from all over the country to go to this event, so IMO NQC should stay in a fairly central place.

I live in Indy, so naturally I would love NQC to come here. Indy has a wonderful downtown and the arena and convention facilities are top notch. There are tons of restaurants within walking distance and a big mall with tons of shops and entertainment.
That being said, I personally think NQC should rotate locations. Why stay in one city? If it moved around, it would put itself closer to fans who normally wouldn't be able to go to an Indy or Louisville. Plus, many cities would salivate over a convention of this size, even if it was just for a two-year deal.
Imagine something like this:
2011-12: Indy
2013-14: Charlotte
2015-16: Dallas
2017-18: Nashville
2019-20: Tampa
Fans would get to explore other locales. You could enjoy great SGM and be a tourist at the same time. That's my vote. Move NQC around.

I understand that one big reason for the interest in moving is that Freedom Hall is very dangerous for lots of the people climbing the steps in the balconies. With no hand rail, and the median age of the audience being somewhat older, there have been many falls and near-falls.

I voted no change but note that DFW is a major airline hub and there are many surrounding venues that could host such an event. All roads lead to Dallas-Fort Worth. The people would also be most receptive.

It would be great to see the NQC moved to Indianapolis. By the time Indianapolis would host it, the expansion of the convention center would be close to being done and more hotel rooms would be available within a short walking distance of the convention center due to Indianapolis hosting the Super Bowl in 2012.

I wonder how they chose who got the survey? I would have loved to do one. Indy is definitely closer to me - 3 H drive opposed to a 5 H drive in L'ville, but really I think L'ville is an ideal location. It's not in the crowded downtown area - parking is 100% better for those who would stay out a ways too. I actually think the Indy hotels would be more expensive than L'ville.

I may be imagining that I read this in the Singing News or on the website, but I thought that they said there was record attendance this year at NQC. Why in the world would they consider moving locations if they had record attendance with the economy the way it is?
I voted no change. But, I have to admit that the option of moving it closer to N.C. would sit well with me. I've never attended because of the distance. I think that the NQC board should look at the addresses of the people that attend...not just the permanent seat holders. Take that information and try to centralize the location to where it benefits everyone. I look at the dates in the schedules on the Singing News and I just don't see where Kentucky is that big of a Southern Gospel state. You would think that if they put it closer to states that are big draws for the groups the rest of the year, that turnout would be huge. Is this just my way of thinking? NC, TN, and GA are all huge southern gospel states....and after all, it is called Southern Gospel not Mid-Western gospel!!! lol

I don't know, because I'm not a permanent seat holder, but I got the survey. This was my first year at NQC (but definitely not my last!!)

I would love to see NQC move to Indy. Then again, I live about 45 minutes away from Indy. I would invite all of you who would need to stay the night to come to my house, but it's only a three bedroom house.

Since the SG target audience is older people, I do see the concern - But, with an attendance of 20,000 to 30,000 people, is it possible to secure a building that can seat that many and not have those problems? I have been to Freedom Hall for NQC and can testify that they do have an ELEVATOR for the balconies. If I remember correctly, there are only certain balconies that are separate from the others that the elevator doesn't accommodate, and those areas don't seat even half of the people. Once you are in the balcony getting to your seat, yeah, that can get a little hairy even for a young person. It's easy to lose your balance. On the other hand, in a building that is created to seat that many people, won't you always have that problem?
I understand the concern about injuries, but to me it just doesn't seem like a good reason to move. Just my opinion . . .

Why don't they just put hand rails up in Freedom Hall, if that is a problem? Then it would be safe for all concerned to climb the stairs.

That's exactly what i was thinking! If they want Louisville to keep hosting them, tell Louisville, Freedom Hall, Fairgrounds, etc. to install handrails in all the balconies at Freedom Hall, and they may consider staying there.

The elevator only goes up 1 level. If you're really in nosebleed section, you can climb as many and 30 rows and the higher it gets, the steeper the steps. We used to sit 2 rows from the top. The big screens are fine from there.
I didn't see where anyone "official" said it was record attendance, but it certainly looked larger than it has been the past several years.

They do need hand rails in the balcony of Freedom Hall.
NQC brings older people to the venue but younger people have the same problem. This is not just a problem for NQC it's a problem for every event that is held in Freedom Hall. There are numerous ball games, conventions and other events held there each year. I wonder why they haven't considered putting up hand rails?? People are going to fall and some of these falls could be very serious. Do you think it will take a multi-million dollar law suite to get the problem fixed?

Most likely. Pennywise and pound foolish and imagine the pain and aggravation and loss work costs someone will have to endure. If NQC keeps booking the venue knowing the dangers, it'd be easy enough to see them being included as a plantiff with joint responsibiliity. Yeah they probably have insurance but why forget about the impact on the lives of your customers?

Why not let NQC come back down south to Atlanta, GA! I would definitely attend then since I live about 2 to 3 hours away from Atlanta. I have always wanted to attend NQC but the distance has always cancelled my plans of going.
Didn't NQC used to be in Atlanta?

no change. don't go and cant afford it even more now. I would try to go to Indy since someone I dearly loved is buried an hour or so away though

Living half way between the two cities really makes no difference to me, but honestly Indy might bring the potential for a larger venue!
