The following is a list of the "new federal bureaucracies" that the House Republican Conference claims are created in House Speaker Nancy Pelosi's health care reform bill.

Well.... I suppose all of those bureaucracies will be hiring people, so perhaps that will help the jobless problem?

I did find this one interesting:
"No Child Left Unimmunized Against Influenza" demonstration grant program (Section 2524, p. 1391)

Harvie-
Reminds me of a study I saw that explained how the little guys are like little walking petri dishes.

According to that study, if you want to keep older folk from getting the flu, forget about vaccinating them - vaccinate the kids! According to them, it cut disease rates by a wider margin.

I don't know, but I thought it was kind of funny in an odd, somewhat sociopathic sort of way.

Only problem with this is kids who have egg allergies. My youngest can't get the H1N1 and much of the vaccine for regular flu is still egg based. : /

Yup. That would be a problem.

The whole egg thing seems remarkably unscientific in this day & age.

Yup, I too have the egg allergies. There are a lot of things I have to be careful eating or taking.

Maybe we could start a letter writing campaign and have Pelose start a bureau to keep track of government bureaucracies so none of them get lost.

Don't forget Flu Czar.

(Though, if they choose me, I'd prefer the title Flu Floozy!)

Speaking of more and more govt. in my American Century History class, we were looking at experts of one of Hoover's speeches against the New Deal and what he says could be said today.

quote:

you cannot extend the mastery of government over the daily life of a people without somewhere making it master of people's souls and thoughts...Every step in that direction poisons the very roots of liberalism. It poisons political equality, free speech, free press, and equality of opportunity. It is the road not to more liberty but to less liberty. True liberalism is found not in striving to spread bureaucracy, but in striving to set bounds to it. True liberalism seeks all legitimate freedom first in the confident belief that without such freedom the pursuit of other blessings is in vain."

Amazing how the word liberal has been warped from defending Freedom, to demanding a complete govt. take over.

quote:

The New Deal repudiation of Democracy has left the Republican Party alone the guardian of the Ark of the Covenant with its charter of freedom

And once again Republicans are the ones we are depending on in the Congress to protect our Freedom, as long as they don't listen to the left.

quote:

Freedom does not die from frontal attack. It dies because men in power no longer believe in a system based upon Liberty.]

quote:

By this route government has entered into business in competition with the citizen.

Sound Familar

quote:

No people will long remain a moral people under a government that repudiates its obligations, that uses public funds to corrupt the people, that conceals its actions by double bookkeeping.

quote:

All this clatter of class and class hate should end. Thieves will get into high places as well as low places and they should both be given economic security-in jail. But they are not a class. This is a classless country. If we hold to our unique American ideal of equal opportunity there can never be classes or masses in our country. To preach these class ideas from the White House is new in American life. There is no employing class, no working class, no farming class. You may pigeonhole a man or woman as a farmer or a worker or a professional man or an employer or even a banker. But the son of the farmer will be a doctor or a worker or even a banker, and his daughter a teacher. The son of a worker will be an employer-or maybe President. And certainly the sons of even economic royalists have a bad time holding the title of nobility.

The glory of our country has been that every mother could look at the babe in her arms with confidence that the highest position in the world was open to it.

The election of Barak Obama proves this very point that anyone can become president.

the entire speech

Which is why you'll often see the distinction made between "classical liberal" which today would be called conservative, and "modern liberal" which gets called a whole bunch of things

I think "classical liberal" is more along the lines of "libertarian" than "conservative".

You are right Huang! Conservative today is synonymous with: Maintaining status quo, resisting change, unequal privileges and rights, etcetera.

That's not even close to being the only problem with this. We're not seeing the forest from the trees here.

I agree to all of that.

Though of course these definitions are largely limited to America.

Status quo...having a moral base.

Resisting change....not compromising with liberalism.

Unequal priveledges and rights....earning what you get and not pandering to immoral practices that are societal destructors.

Nice try.

Maintaining the status quo is not the equivalent of having a moral base.

It also appears you have the idea compromising with liberalism is an inherent evil or something bad, but this is false.

Unequal privileges and rights is a topic entirely separate from earning what one receives and not pandering from immoral practices. The fields are entirely separate from each other.

Your defense of conservatism was most assuredly not a "nice try."

NOT a "nice try," but RIGHT ON!

We either practice God's laws,
or oppose God's laws.

having a moral base- imposing your religious ideas unconstitutionally on the public

not compromising with liberalism- refusing to admit when you're wrong or to consider new or innovative ideas

earning what you get and not pandering to immoral practices that are societal destructors- flaunting wealth and ingoring the plight of those less fortunate while claiming the religion of a jewish carpenter who spent most of his life with the poor, and people who had engaged in "practices that are societal destructors"

How about resisting every single advance in human rights in the entire history of western civilization. Then attempting to take credit 50 years later when the right was already well established despite their objections.
