Dh and I are thinking of relocating in the next couple of years to be closer to family. The nice thing about his job is he can decide where he wants to go and transfer. I went to hslda's map to see which states are close to family and have good home school laws. I was so shocked to see how great Michigan's laws were. The cost of living was another plus. The only downside is trying to tell DH that the winters are not that much colder then here they just last a bit longer.

The market is good for some people. Manufacturing is down but they need engineers, health care and other highly technical jobs.
Plus there is a big difference between the western side of the state (Traverse City, etc) than the Metro Detroit area job markets.

Since DH would be moved to an area that is a city I have looked at that Grand Rapids area for housing. WOW! I thought we had a low cost of living. I was disappointed to see only assistant manager positions open instead of managers. But if this is Gods will it will happen. I would love to homeschool my son there since he does much better learning with hands on instead of an open book. That would be so much easier if I did not have to figure out how to write it down for the records we have to keep here in Missouri.

I am in the metro Detroit area and the job market stinks. Even the automobile industry has gone down and many shops that supplied parts has gone down as well. I have never been on the western side of MI so I don't know the market over there. I do know that over all, MI has a very high unemployment rate.
I am having a hard time just finding a part time job. I can't even begin to think how it would be if I couldn't depend on family for help sometimes.

Even though Michigan doesn't require records, I would still keep them. We are planning on homeschooling for high school this year. Ds went to a private school last year so I didn't have to worry about records. The problem with MIchigan is that a lot of people seem to mind everyone elses' business...If they see something that they don't think you ought to be doing, they call the police or protective services....MO is a lot different to homeschool in- I loved homeschooling there- It seemed like there was so much more that DS could do there...before we moved, we were going to join a big homeschool group in Joplin.. i was trying to talk Dh into moving back there, but he can't take the heat in the summertime.
