My church, though located in Texas, is among the mega-churches embracing P&W and CCM while barely acknowledging SG. Our music Sunday mornings is a compilation of P&W and a couple verses from one of maybe 10 hymns. More often than not that hymn is Amazing Grace with the P&W addition of "My Chains are Gone." SG and hymns are associated with the senior citizens as though someone in their 20's or 30's may not like that style. I do seem to be in the minority. How do any of you in a similar situation cope?

If any of you Southern Baptists looking for a music ministry position... my church is searching for a new music minister.

My church likes hymns and SG and I am very thankful for that!

BTW, I am Independent Fundamental Baptist.

My church does Praise and Worship with a hymn or two every now and then. It seems that everything we do now is the modern style songs, and not the older style that most of the elders in the church grew up on. I love the hymns and I LOVE SG...I enjoy the Praise and Worship, but I wish we had a little more SG mixed in with it.

This is one of the things I love about our church. We have a really good mix of hymns and P&W, and our MOM loves SG music.

In my church we do almost entirely older songs. Our choir uses a "convention style book, and for congregational singing we use "The Church Hymnnal". We do sing numerous choruses which I suppose would be categorized P&W, but they are mostly older ones. I don't think our people would be against newer songs as long as there is a blend. The problems I see with many churches that I visit, or hear of, is that they think it has to be one way or the other. What is the problem with keeping the old hymns while still using newer songs? The quoted reason often is that "we have to reach the younger folks". I agree with that, but do we (or they actually) need to leave us older folks out who still enjoy the hymns and older choruses? There is nothing I enjoy better than an old fashioned choir singing the older hymns or convention songs, but I still enjoy the newer songs when they are sung under the annointing. I also enjoy a rehearsed choir singing a modern arrangement with the same stipulation. The main thing is to keep in mind the reason for music in the church,............... To praise and glorify God!

Jess,

You're post is scary... it seems like you took my thoughts and typed them out!

Our church sings NO SG and when I try to talk to anyone about SG they don't know what I'm talking about. They know the name Gaither, but that's about it. It makes me sad too when people think SG is only for the older generation. Being an under 40 year old SG lover can be a lonely place.

I've chosen not to sing at church, mostly because I don't know or care for the music. I listen to my SG in the car and at home, so I figure I'm getting my music there.

On a good note, the wonderful Liberty Quartet is coming to our church in a few months. I can't wait!

I'm thankful that the church I attend only sings hymns out of a hymnbook. Plus we only use the piano for instrumentation too! Though I see many other church's that don't, I'm thankful that my small church does. It really bothered me to see a church advertise with "come to church in your jeans." But that's another subject . . .

It's Sunday and this morning was more of the same. I think we sang 1 or 2 P&W and a couple hymns (but the standard ones we always sing). Afterwards, one of the choir members who is in my class and among the under 40 crowd was saying that she is going to ask the music director if they can do more P&W and less hymns in the first service (The "Traditional service"), even adding a few new P&W. I bit my tongue. I mean, there is a contemporary service for that. Why drag the traditional into it? One of the other ladies at my table responded to her that the old people wouldn't like it if they changed.

Our church sings hymns all the time. Some specials might be more contemporary, and there are a few P&W choruses during the year, but that's about it. Most specials sing the traditional SG songs, or standards. Of course, I'm a big SG fan, so any group I'm singing with will sing a good SG song!

As a van driver for our church, I play SG when picking up the kids (mostly teens), and I have won several over to it! I was even privileged to take a van load to see Gold City a month ago!

Several are also interested in the quartet I've formed!

SG has a major influence on the music sung at church, and I don't see anything changing it.

The Church I go to does a even mix of PW, SG, and Soft CCM in praise part of service and I for one love it. have a mix so all can enjoy it not just try to do the same thing and not change.

I attend a Southern style i guess. AoG

I would submit that we would all be better off if we would cease bickering over musical styles and just choose music that is worshipful and God honoring, no matter the style.

Since when did worship become about OUR petty little tastes, anyway? Shouldn't it be about pleasing God, who is after all, the subject of our worship?

I'm thankful that in my church they have chosen that route, to simply pick songs that are conducive to an atmosphere of worship, and let style worry about itself....

I don't see this as "bickering" at ALL......I see it as personal preferences.

It took me a LONG time to find my church, which is 99.999% Southern Gospel. We have a FABULOUS 80+ voice choir, orchestra, and we we use the "shape notes" hymnal.
We also regularly have MAJOR SG groups in our church.
Personally, I find P&W "words on the wall" as uncomfortable as so called "Christian Hip Hop".

But I ask again, since when is worship supposed to be about OUR tastes or preferences? Shouldn't we be seeking what God wants instead of tickling our own ears musically?

My hands down favorite style of music is hard rock, and when it comes to worship, I really enjoy the modern worship sound, but I don't go to my church or look for a church and hope they have hard rock as a worship style, or even the most cutting edge CCM or modern worship. That would be seeking after myself, not God's will for my church membership.

You say P&W "on the wall" makes you uncomfortable.....sinc when are we called to be comfortable in worship? Scripture says "By Him therefore let us offer the sacrifice of praise to God continually, that is, the fruit of our lips giving thanks to His name" (Hebrews 13:15). Last time I checked, sacrifices, by their very nature, aren't comfortable things.

The worship, that "sacrifice of praise" needs to be about honoring God, not getting comfy in a fellowship that suits our petty little tastes.

Offering praise to God comes in more ways than music. Individuals are going to have musical tastes. As long as we offer praise to God, I agree it doesn't matter what style but everyone's praise is going to be personal and different. I don't get into every song our church uses in their praise service but I may hear a song on the radio going home from church that allows me to offer praise to God.

This sounds like a debate hubby and I have often. While some music may not be my preference, it is true that we should focus on the purpose of our worship, not the style of the music. It does not matter if one style is more "comfortable" or more "palatable." However, some music is so objectionable to me that it prevents me from entering and staying in a worshipful state. In that case, the music DOES matter.

We should have a debate on musical styles. Why not? Debates are healthy and help either side to understand each other. If we can't use this forum to debate and discuss, what point is there in having a forum?

I really don't find any scripture that supports whether or not that God is interested in tastes or preferences. He is only interested in our worship and praise to Him. As far as the scripture that you quoted in Hebrews 13:15. let us look at that for one moment.

"By Him therefore let us offer the sacrifice of praise to God continually, that is, the fruit of our lips giving thanks to His name" (Hebrews 13:15). The sacrifice here is exactly what Paul referred to here, the sacrifice is the fruit of our lips giving thanks to His name. It is not endorsing either form of gospel music. So, be free with whatever taste that you enjoy, as long as it gives glory to God.

On a more personal note, I am so sick and tired of being "pushed back" by the CCM and P&W crowd by their statements of "We shouldn't bicker about what style." That is true we shouldn't. But then the same people that say that are the ones that are hostile and adamantly against using hymns and SG songs in the church. Hey, got news for you, there are a lot of people that want and enjoy SG in the church and the tide is going to turn back to the old songs in the church. It is already happening in many circles and it will continue. Maybe by then Hillsong and the like will have to go out of business!!!

Look at the title of this thread:

LOVING SG......
Is this not the whole reason for this forum?

With that, I will speak no more on this.

I hate to break it to you, but I'm a CCM artist who is TOTALLY infavor of using hymns and any and all styles of music in worship. As are most every artist I know.

And the only arguments I ever hear about style tend to come from the traditionalists who oppose newer forms of worship. The road runs both way, and neither side is right in downing the other....

Are you saying that in the name of your preferred style of music that you would like to see other music ministries fail? And you call US hostile?

quote:

So, be free with whatever taste that you enjoy, as long as it gives glory to God.

And we agree, isn't that what it is all about at the end of the day?

I only have to say I lost a ;lot of respect for someone in this thread. to say you hope a music ministry that has won many to the Lord should fail, I think you need to question your thoughts.

PS was stating a prayer request there.

I posted earlier and will again.

I sing SG and have a well, wide mix of styles interlaced into it.

If it leads someone to Christ no matter the style, I am a full supporter, might not listen to it but pray for their ministry.

for the record i love Christian hip-hop.

many Churches go to the P&W style because they want to win souls for the Lord.

same as many play SG and hymns to win souls for the Lord.

Look at what God is doing and how He is moving in services, that is how should be seen

It's very troubling to me that a thread about Love for Southern Gospel has degraded to this.

I try to avoid this type thread. I think there are a number of people out there that has no regard to this forum.
