I forget just how old Nadia was when we put a very small lovey in the crib with her. It is a small blanket with a pooh head in the middle, measures 10x10. I think she was about 4 months old. There was one night she just would not settle down! So we found this, gave it to her and she's had it ever since.
We are wondering what the thoughts are on how old a child needs to be to have a lovey. I'm not going to put something in a newborn's crib, but what have you read, experience....

Statistically SIDS is most likely between 1 and 4 months of age. I feel comfortable with a small lovey at about 4 months... and I attach a soother directly to the lovey. Infants are going to put the lovey in their mouth (in front of their face) in either case, and for me, it made the soother easier for the baby to find and use.

I think we call them comforters, not loveys, in the UK.
Neither of mine ever had one, and I wouldn't have wanted to risk them having one either. I personally don't think that loose material is a good idea in a cot (crib) at any age.

Neither of my children have had one, and I wouldn't want to risk it. It is recommended that no loose blankets, clothing etc be in a babies cot.

My kids are usually around 3-4 months. I give it to them and then take it out of the crib when I go to bed, so it's not in there all night. We leave binkies scattered so they can find them once they are old enough to do it themselves.
Levi has *had* to have an animal to snuggle since about 9 months old. Doesn't matter which animal, but he has to have one. Lately, he has to have two, and he sleeps on his belly, so has one under each arm. Too cute...

We haven't put anything in with her in her sleeping area since she's just 6 wks old but I was wondering when. I also wonder if they choose their own or if you can coax them into a certain one?
I bought a lovie that I want her to use/have but I'm hoping she will like it as well.. if she does I'm buying atleast two more of the same. I can't forget how distraught my sister was when she lost her 'pillow' in the mall one day.. she screamed for it that night and several nights after, it was the saddest thing.

I think that's what we did with Nadia. She just wouldn't settle down and quieted immediately when we put a pacifier in her hand. She didn't even suck, that's when we looked for a lovey. What we did to get her to like it was I would put it inbetween us when we nursed. So it had my scent. She just became attached to it. But I realize now that she is the sort of kid who will sleep with any sort of stuffed animal. I'm thinking it will be ok if we just let him fall asleep with it and then take it out. If he needs it, that is. He might not. And that's fine.

Hmm...I don't remember when we started giving Hunter one. He was older than 4 months I know that, but then again he didn't really start sleeping by himself until then. Right now he is 18 months old and he sleeps with a blanket and a curious george monkey.

Mine took cuddly toys to bed from about 12-14 months onwards, but never bits of material.

My daughter adopted her new homemade flannel summer blanket. She was still in a crib, but longer than the usual crib blankets. So I bought some inexpensive flannel and hemmed the edges. I made two of them. They ended up balled up under her. I washed them regularly with other bedding so they never became those nasty gray things. Later she slept with a variety of stuffed animals.
At 4 yo she was diagnosed with allergies to mold and dust mites/dust. So we had to find a different solution to what she could sleep with. In order to get her to give up on these stuffed animals, I explained the situation to her and told her we would exchanged her bunch of sleeping pals for one really nice one that could be washed. At 4 she was OK with this. My argument for it is only that it worked.

Niether of my kids have attached themselves to something (except a binky with my oldest), so we just used crib toys for decoration. You know those plastic links? We use those to attach toys to the top of the crib rail so they have something to play with when they go to sleep, but they have to sit up or lay down and bat at it. It doesn't get in the way of their face at all.
We always used receiving blankets to cover them after 4 months though. When Timmy was 18 months, we gave him a real blanket and a pillow (a special Swedish breathable baby pillow) and a stuffed animal in his crib.

My kiddos didn't care to have anything in their cribs, but I didn't put anything in with them until they were rolling around on their own (6 months or so?)
Isabel is 19 months old now and for a few months she has been taking 4-6 babies to bed with her. LOL. Isaac is 3 1/2 and for almost 2 years now has slept with a bear he found in a box at an auction. Someone offered it to him. It was kind of old, didn't have a nose, but it was clean so we let him keep it, LOL. It's his favorite.

Well I grew up with all kinds of stuffed animals in bed with me. I even slept with my teddy bear till I was mid teens. Didn't hurt me any :)
I see no harm in sleeping with a "lovey" - its when you are carrying the lovey around outside in public after you are a few years old that its kinda a problem :)

More babies died of SIDS when you were a baby, MC4JC. My crib might have had lead based paint on it too, and I came out fine. But I won't purchase a crib with lead based paint. My grandma fed my mom baby cereal at 2 months old, and my mom came out just fine too. But, no one nowadays would dream of giving a baby cereal at 2 months old. That is a tired argument that needs to be retired. Sorry, pet peeve of mine.

My daughter attached herself to a blanket at around a little before a year. She takes it EVERYWHERE and has to have it at bedtime. She is also a thumb sucker. She puts a corner of the blanket in her fist and sticks out the thumb and sucks it. And it is only her right hand she uses. She is showing sings of being a left handed writer, so maybe that is why; she uses her free hand. I didn't force her to do this. She just started on her own. Oh, and it has to be one particular blanket. If I have to wash it, I do it after she has fallen asleep and put it back before she wakes up. She even wakes up in the middle of the night looking for it sometimes. I wouldn't force the issue too soon. Most children want a "lovey" or "blankie" for comfort. As they get older they find ways to self soothe. Where as younger children find that from their mother usually. I would wait a little longer before introducing such an item. Like someone else said, until they have full control of their head movements.

So I would wait until at least 6 months, if not later. When they can really move themselves around, and have demonstrated that they will move themselves if they get uncomfortable, even in their sleep.
