Who here uses linux and what distro do you use? I was just curious because it's somewhat of a hobby of mine. I have Ubuntu 8.10. The upgrade from 8.04 included new video drivers that actually work with my comp so I'm stoked about it.

I use Fedora myself. I mainly use it for software development though, not much for personal use.
I don't have a particular reason for using it -- Redhat was the first one I used, and it seemed to have everything I needed, so I just stuck with it and then followed onto Fedora when the Redhat releases ended.

I use Linux every day. Its my primary and secondary machines at work, both of them running Ubuntu (7.10 and 8.10). I also use Xubuntu 8.10 on my laptop.
I have also dual booted 2 home Windows computers with Ubuntu 8.10 for various purposes.
I also use Puppy Linux for various experiments on older, more limited machines. I have Puppy and DSL bootable installations on flash drives.
Just for distro reference, I used to use OpenSuse and Fedora. I started on Ubuntu with 7.04 and have really liked that distro line. So for the near future, Ubuntu will remain my distro of choice. If I had to switch again, it would remain with a Debian-based distro.
As for using Linux at home, except for some games, I use Linux for nearly everything. And recently I have even begun running World of Warcraft on my Linux box. So one by one, I have eliminated the need for Windows. Games are the only remaining applications I need on Windows. And slowly, I am finding more of them working on Wine, so I rarely need to use Windows at all.

I use quite a number of different Linux systems, FreeBSD, OpenBSD, etc... What I choose often is dictated by what I am trying to accomplish i.e. Redhat or Suse for Symantec(Veritas) and/or Oracle, CentOS for VOIP applications, etc...

Did you know that VMWARE server is free, and you can run a virtual instance of windows on you Linux box for those applications that will not work with wine?

I currently use Ubuntu and Puppy on different machines. I've tried in the past Suse and Mepis, both are good. I'll still always use Windows because I work on Windows PC's and still use some software that I haven't gotten to work on Linux....YET.

I have Ubuntu 8.10 on my laptop, along with XP. 8.10 had the right drivers for my wireless network card so I have been using it more. I may download wine since they now have a stable full release and see how much of my win programs I can get to work on it.

I use Linux daily, and then some. Really, I use it all the time, since it's on my server.
Personal laptop: Debian Stable/IceWM
Business laptop: Ubuntu Hardy/IceWM
Server: Debian Stable
Mom's desktop: Dual boot WinXP(for specific MahJongg game) and Debian Stable/IceWM (for everything else)
I had to put Ubuntu on my business machine because the PCMCIA card I'm using for a NIC uses a weird bus type.
I used to use RedHat, but I tried new things when RH split to Enterprise and Fedora, and I settled on Debian as my favorite.
I love Linux! :)

I use Ubuntu Studio on my laptop. It's Ubuntu with a bunch of open source software installed like The Gimp and Blender.
I had allot of trouble getting that laptop to work too. It took me 4 days to get it to work. Turns out the manufacture didn't put thermal grease on the GPU. I had to use my 1337 skillz to open the laptop apply some thermal grease I had left over from building my super gaming PC 4 months ago. Put it back together and then finally I wouldn't crash wall running Firefox. Imagine 3 cents worth of Thermal Grease would have saved me one big headache.

I wondered too. So I downloaded the 0.3.7 QEMU virtual machine version of ReactOS and gave it a spin on my Ubuntu 8.10 box.
Well... ReactOS is not ready for prime-time... yet.
Sure, it kind of works, but is really quirky and has a lot of bugs. It even failed on WordPad.
Now if they manage to pull it off, and get something as solid as XP, then when MS finally pulls the plug on XP support, people will have options and don't have to upgrade to whatever new Microsoft beta operating system they are pushing at the time.

Wow I have read this thread since I posted about the web cam issues on my 18yo's Dell Mini running the Ubuntu OS and lemme tell you it is like I am reading a foreign language! But yet I persist. Like one of those immersion language learning courses.
BTW- she said the web cam is still a little slow but that it is workable for her... for now- she is going to see if any of the folks at the college know how to make it right.
