I know a lot of guys like the comfort and/or look of a "wife-beater" shirt - particularly when sleeping or in and around the home (when it's hot). Do you think it's OK to wear one outside for a casual social outing? Like to see a movie or go shopping at grocery store, etc.? ....

Does it look too tacky, informal, odd, etc. for men to wear them out of the home?

What's your opinion?

I think they look funny personally. But I have a friend who wears them out like it's a regular shirt.

They are super casual and unless you are going over to a friend's house to do yard work or help out, they are pretty homely IMO.

Sometimes the weather is so hot that I understand wearing tank tops. I just suggest trying to stay away from them, unless you are Matthew Mcconaughey going for a run. j/k

A wife beater shirt is just a white tank top. I am always wearing one, lol...but then, I'm a woman and can get away with it. I don't have many pictures where I"m not wearing a white tank top. It's my uniform. If you're a guy, no, it doesn't look good.

Very few men and women look attractive in the typical "wife-beater": form-fitting, barely opaque, white cotton knit.

I wear tank tops and camisole-type shirts around the house or dance practice. To go out, I'll wear another shirt or cardigan.

No, I think it would look out of place. Unless maybe he was going to a liquor store or something.

Tacky. Keep the underwear under actual clothes.

Guys, please do not leave your property without sleeves. Your wife or girlfriend loves you--all the different parts of you. Everyone else only sees that you have hair in weird places, odd tan lines, etc. Do everyone a favor and wear a regular t-shirt while visiting public places and the homes of others.

I really hate the nick-name too. It's pretty disrespectful and crude and even gives people who wear them a negative image (by association). Not all people who wear these tops are wife-beaters, nor do they engage in some kind of socially reprehensible behavior.

I wonder how the name "wife-beater" even originated now that I think of it? Is there some kind of stereotype that men who beat their wives wear such garments? Who would think to name them such a name?

I guess I could maybe just call them tank tops, but I was under the impression that "wife-beaters" were a more specific kind that were more fitted, white in color, and lined.

They do have a kind of working-man's image to them. I tend to envision guys working on their car or yard wearing them OR .....the more hip-hop look of being urban styled and/or thug/ganster-ish. I realize the wife-beater's appeal has kind of spread more mainstream and into fashion these days.

I've personally never thought it OK to wear one to church or on a date or just out shopping, etc. I've seen them as basically in-home under garments or ultra light clothing for hot weather. Yet, a very good and respectable friend of mine does wear them casually and can sort of get away with it. He's a jock type of guy and also has a demeanor and look that makes it kind of stylish for him. People don't necessarily think poorly of him for it. Althought it was funny when someone did question him about it once.

I also tend to see a lot of youth wear them as part of their style these days. I guess I'm a bit older and also don't find them personally stylish for/on me.

Hmmm, it does seem that women can wear these and more easily feel comfortable around people/fit in. On the other hand, a drawback might be that men would stare at you more if they feel it is more revealing and have a perverted mind. That's a drawback that women seem to always have with showing more skin with any gargments/outfits, whereas men just wear whatever and some even just walk out of the house with no shirt on at all.

Do you wear them to grocery stores...the mall.......doctor's office, etc. etc.?

LOL @ liquor store comment. Now isn't that falling into the stereotype of the "wife-beater"?

I think it depends on where you live. I live in a hot climate and people are more casual in general. On hot days, I've seen people wear them to do casual things - like wash a car, run to the store, or something like that. Usually though, people wear t-shirts though instead. Or they'll put a short sleeved shirt over it, but leave the shirt unbuttoned. My dad does that sometimes if he is working on his car or something similar.

I don't think that I'd wear one, mostly because I don't like showing my arms. But if I did, I could see myself wearing one to clean out the garage or something like that - provided that the tank top wasn't so thin that it was see-through.

Manda, my understanding is that they are men's tank-top style shirts, usually white.

However, I have never seen a man wear one (on it's own) in a modest and/or non-tacky manner.

They are either tight and see through for the purpose of showing off "hotness", or they are grungy and lazy and schlubby looking.

A loose t-shirt works just as well for keeping cool on a hot day. Better, since it exposes less skin for potential burning.

Thanks, Maggie. Do you mean kind of like a t shirt with no sleeves?

Thanks, Lisa - to us Brits that's a white vest.

Fairly stock standard wear for young men (and some older men) in the summer (without the stains), but usually not baggy or shapeless. Where did the "wife beater" name come from???!!!

Oh, got it. My friend would always say she was putting on a "wife beater" and jeans and I just thought it was a like a casual tank. I have a few cotton tanks that I wear when it is 90 degrees or so out.

If is an white Hanes undershirt, the type you see on episodes of "Cops" then I think you need to grow a mullet and lose a few teeth to complete the look.

Here's a really interesting site with some history of the term: LINK

quote:

Whether or not you know it, the history of the “wife beater” goes back to the Middle Ages, where knights who lost their armor in battles often had nothing but the chain-mail undergarment to protect them. Now, those chain mail undershirts, if you will, were (edited) strong — even a sword couldn’t get through. Often, when a knight lost their armor and continued to fight successfully, they were referred to as a waif beater (waif, referring to an abandoned or lost individual). Due to the fact that knights who had been abandoned and continued to fight with only the “shirt off their back” (albeit chain mail), they were given this noble title — an abandoned fighter, beating their way through battle.

and

quote:

The trend changed in 1947 in Detroit, Michigan — when police arrested a local man (James Hartford, Jr.) for beating his wife to death. Local news stations aired the arrest and elements of the case for months after — constantly showing a picture of Hartford, Jr. when he was arrested — wearing a dirty tank top with baked bean stains on it…and constantly referring to him as “the” wife beater.

There's more on there, too, but I thought these were the most interesting parts.

Stains are de rigeur, Manda.

It wouldn't surprise me if reality TV police shows help coin the term.

Thanks for clarification. I had never heard these shirts referred to as "wife-beaters" before. Gee, maybe I do need to get a life.

I watched Cops last night. Of course, the macho guys were either in these shirts or bare chested. I'd think some men would remember they are undershirts and wear them in the garden or under a nice shirt...otherwise be aware that there might be guilt by association.

I think Marlon Brando made them an icon in the movie "Streetcar Named Desire," didn't he? Interesting that the link goes back to Medival times.

I shudder when I see a guy wearing one of these, like he was walking around in his underwear. I'd be more comfortable if he were bare-chested.

I think that it looks a bit tacky if a guy is wearing one in public...unless they are doing yard work or any other kind of hard labor work.

I thought it was a Streetcar Named Desire reference as well (Marlon Brando).

I don't really care if men wear them or not, nor do I generally notice when they do. Of course I live in a cold part of the US so its fairly rare to see them and I hadn't heard that name until dh's hip cousin started using it in the late '90s.

I find it interesting that its okay for women to wear sleeveless shirts but if men do its tacky and cheap.
