This is a new twist on the typical "getting to know you" threads...

I was wondering how many of us growing up (or still) play or compete in sports or other competitions (like say, table tennis )?

Hopefully this will be a new and fun way to get to know each other a bit more!

I've never played any team sports. And there is a good reason, I am not at any good at it :)

My parents are still a little old fashioned and think sports are more for boys too. My sister and I were "smart" so we were encouraged to do the academic stuff. (We could have done both, but whatever)

I don't react very fast so I never hit / catch the ball.

But I like the Olympics. I realized I would have done better in individual sports like swimming or track but its too late now.

Awww...it's never too late to start something new! You might not make it to the olympics but it would still be fun!

You see how young the competitors are? There are 15 year olds on the swim team.

I like Dara Torres. I don't think she's doping. They showed a preview of her workout and it was tiring just to watch. There are still a lot of 40 something athletes but most of them aren't in swimming.

LOL! It's always possible. Just look at Laura Wilkinson...granted, she's a diver, but she didn't start diving until well after 'most' enter the sport.

I competed in Track and Field events, and did decently. I also did Archery and actually qualified for the Junior Olympics...

As far as me personally competing in a sport...

I swam competitively from the age of 9 until I was 18. I was on a club team through high school as well as swimming for my high school team (varsity all 4 years). I wasn't good enough to get to the Olympics, partially because I'm too short 5'0, and partially because I wasn't dedicated enough. My favorite and best stroke was the Butterfly. OH! And I swam at a few Junior Olympics, one against Olympic Medalist Amanda Beard (my wee claim to fame, lol!).

Laura is my age!

I might do a sprint tri. Cycling is something I am trying to get into but racing on a bike is pretty scary to me. So maybe just a few 5ks and 10ks in the future. Maybe a half marathon. Not sure.

Gymnastics made a rule that you had to be at least 16 to compete internationally, which caused a tremendous uproar from countries protesting that their best athletes were 14 and 15, and by 16 they were past their prime. (Look at the Atlanta magnificent 7; many of the leading scorers were 14 and 15.)

But the gymnastics world had been trampled by stories of very young female bodies being pushed to hard to young to prepare for international competition, and this was an attempt to address that. Some of the better Chinese gymnasts were reported in the Chinese newspapers to be only 14 only a few months ago, but now they have passports showing them to be 16.

Male gymnasts don't have that problem, as their full strength takes time to develop. Gymnasts are pound for pound the strongest people in the world.

I have no athletic ability whatsoever. In fact, I was the kid in high school who would end up hospitalized from an asthma attack induced by marching band practice Yep, I'm a total dork

I wish I was more of an athlete. Let me see. In my youth I studied gymnastics and martial arts, but I never really got into competition all that much. I wish I had, honestly. I think it's good for a girl who has any talent or inclination to compete in some sort of sport.

I had a feeling that you had gymnastics in your past...since that was what you posted on.

I used to play all sorts of sports at school - but I was more an 'enthusiastic' athlete than an especially talented one!

I played softball for years. I liked the sport...but was a painfully shy, awkward girl, and hated the others I played with. The other girls were often cruel, brutally competitive and I was naive compared to them...prime teasing material.
I quit in 8th grade because I was much more into band and didn't have time for both. I was a musician all the way until college and loved it. I was pretty good too.

In junior high, I did "all" of the sports....meaning volleyball, basketball, track and field. I was a "field" person throwing shot & discus. As a freshman in high school, I played volleyball until an injury sidelined me & I never got back into playing anything (at least not in school).

Since high school, I have played softball with a church league. That didn't last long as I'm a SLOW runner.

More recently, I have been running & I like it....but I'd stepped out for a few weeks to move. Now to get back on track. I have gained some speed over the years....but mostly it's been stamina that I've gained.

I was never a sport person. I liked the idea of gymnastics, but was never coordinated enough to even attempt it. Same with dance, and swimming. I like to run now, but not competitively.
Did anyone else see the 33 y/o gymnast from Germany? She's a mom too! I'm impressed that she's able to compete at the same level as all of those 16 year olds!

I was always one of the last picked for team sports. The funny thing is that I was fairly sporty as a child, just not a team player.

I was probably one of the fittest girls in my year during the senior years of high school. I walked everywhere I could and rode a half-broken 15hh gelding every afternoon.

I am 5'7" and weighed 48kg without dieting.

I used to do really well in high jump and enjoyed most other sports...

... I could do on my own. LOL

I cycled nearly every day and rode horses in my teens but never did any sport competitively.

Funnily enough, J is good at high jump, long jump and javelin (all solitary sports) and is always last to be picked for team sports.

X loves netball. I guess I should finally learn the rules.

Kylie

I think most people know that I was a competitive figure skater back in the day. I trained in singles and did club competitions but what I loved was precision (now known as synchro skating). We travelled throughout Canada and the US, and I was fortunate enough to skate on one of the best teams in our province. It was such a great experience.

I quit skating in my early teens because of my knees. I do however still teach skating and have for the past 7 years.

In elementary school I played house league baseball and was on the school volleyball, basketball and track teams (I ran the 100m and did high jump). In high school I played on the basketball team and in a local basketball league (but again had to stop because of my knees.)

I'm a very athletic person. I also did swimming (got through all of the levels and into the beginning lifesaving levels) and was a huge fan of gym class. I love throwing a football or baseball with my husband and we both love going rollerblading (it was so much fun to have the experience of teaching my husband how to skate...outside...in the cold Canadian winter.)

I'm not athletic. I also was born with a hip condition that wouldn't allow me much mobility. I always dreamed of being a gymnast and wanted to play softball and volleyball.

All my competition was musical. I succeeded there, though.
