Hi, I bought a stereo system at a thrift store for like $18 bucks and the thing will not play cds.
I tried to play a freshly burnt cd from my computer and it went throught all the disc changer (it has five slots) and said no disc, any idea what the problem is?

Thanks.

Sadly, the problem is probably that the CD player is shot. They're rather disposable.

You could try a lens cleaner, which looks like a CD with one side covered in fur.

Can I get a new one put in? or is it cheaper to get a new cd player?
And I'll try the lens cleaner thing.

Try a commercial audio cd. Not all cd players, particularly old ones, like burned cd's even if it's supposedly burnt as an audio cd.

If it doesn't work, I don't even know that I'd try a lens cleaner. You pay $12 for one, and I've never had one work. A can of compressed air might work (and if it doesn't, you still need it for your computer and other electronics). You can get a used standalone cd player off ebay for about the same price as a lens cleaner - and preferably one that doesn't hold multiple discs (more mechanisms to break) and one that was a decent mid-level model when it was new.

That was my first thought too.

Agree. A lot of stereos won't play burnt CD - I've found it may have something to do with the speed at which you burn the CD. The slower you burn it the better the chance you have of it working. If it still doesn't work, just buy a new stereo...it's only $18.
