I mean non fiction. I used to, but I found that the message the author wanted to share was pretty much summed up in the first chapter, so I ended up no finishing the book. So I stopped buying them. I liked the Yada Yada Prayer Group book one, and another book by Beverly Lewis, but I don't go for the christian self help stuff. Anyone else out there dissatisfied with chrisitan writers?

Try reading some of the older writers such as:
AW Tozer
Spurgeon
Ironside
J Vernon Mcgee
Moody

I don't read a lot of Christian non-fiction either.
What I do like to read though are Christian biographies. I just finished reading two autobiographies by a woman named Immaculee Ilibagiza, who survived the Rwandan Genocide. Stuff like that I enjoy reading. But I'm not big on reading the Philip Yancey, Rick Warren, Joel Osteen type stuff. To each their own.

I am fixing to read the books on prayer by E.M. Bounds, I hear they are awesome.

E.M. Bounds books are awesome. It's been a while since I've read them but I do refer back to them every once in a while.

I agree with the OP. I tend to only read Christian non-fic books that discuss subjects that are unfamiliar to me, and even then, I try and get them from the library instead of actually buying them. I think it gets a bit redundant to keep re-reading my own beliefs over and over again. If I already know I'm going to agree with the author, what will I really be learning, ya' know?

Totally agree with this statement which was made by our senior pastor: "I rarely recommend "Christian" books....I find that most of them would have made outstanding articles......then a publisher got a hold of them"

I don't do Christian Self-help, either. If I need something I go straight to the Word. I've been studying book by book which gives a "whole counsel of God" approach and find Christian Self Help to be rather shallow after that. I've also learend how to study topically when I haven't gotton to a book yet or when I didn't focus on a particular part (message) of the book enough.

I read them because they are insightful and I find that my perspective on any issue is very short ranged, but hearing what others thing about certain topics, especially very smart people like Piper, Driscoll, Bickle and so forth, lets me see things in a greater manner. It deepens my relationship with the Lord and 'exponentiates' the depth of my learning from reading the word.
I don't go to church just to listen to a sermon, but to fellowship and see what God is doing in other peoples lives as well. I think the same with books. I don't just read my bible for the stories, but I want to know what others went through and their outcomes as they were washed by the word. I used to feel the same way about 'self-help' books. Just read your bible and you will be alright. I find that 'un-logical' and borderline arrogant. I feel you do yourself and your family a great disservice if you just rely on your own perspective of things.
Of course, I am biased. I read a lot.

I have read some books like Battlefield of the Mind, Fighting the War Within, The Wonderful Spirit Filled Life, all of which gave me a little more insight into each of the topics presented. In fact, The Wonderful Spirit Filled Life was a key to me coming to know the Holy Spirit on a more personal level, and to recognize what He was doing in my life. Battlefield of the Mind and Fighting the War Within gave me insight into how to fight the Spiritual war, and clued me into things that helped me to a lot of scripture that helped me over a short period of time; it allowed me to grow rather rapidly. There are other books I am looking into. I have read other books that were not quite as helpful.
