I got a call from my mother in law yesterday afternoon. Her husband (my husband's step-father) had just got out of the hospital for depression a few days ago and now he was missing. She had taken him to the mall to try to help cheer him up, and he started acting "afraid" of everything and wanted to go home. So, she took him back to their car, and he started hyperventilating. She gave him a bag to breathe into and then he said he felt like he was going to throw up. She let him go back into the mall by himself to use the restroom, and he never came back out. I don't know why she left him unsupervised other than the fact that she has a bad hip and possibly didn't feel like she could walk across the parking lot again. He was missing from approximately 1pm until 10:30pm last night. My husband found him in a motel room. He is supposed to be a recovered alcoholic for 30 years, but he had been drinking when they found him. He is also a diabetic and he has issues with depression. I feel bad for my mother in law, but he is obviously too much for her to handle. This is the second time he has done this. My husband and I are not sure how to help her. How much rights does a mentally ill person have? My husband wants to have him committed for the sake of his mother, and for his own safety. They are both in their 70's and are having health issues. First I would appreciate prayer for them, and second I would appreciate any suggestions on how to deal with this situation. Thank you. Dee Dee

This is tough. I'm so sorry you all have to deal with this. Since your SFIL has disorientation/willful social disconnection/health/age and now drinking problems, I think it's fair to say he needs some kind of confinement and management. Call his doctor and schedule an appointment - doctors deal with this kind of thing all the time and know what resources are available and how it should be handled from a professional point of view. This has got to be so hard on all of you, but especially your mother who is aged and not well herself. It well could be time for the younger generation to step in to help; the parents can't handle the problems anymore alone. And gladly I will pray. God bless you all.

It is very difficult for family members to have someone committed. Contact NAMI. Contact you local or state mental health authority. If you tell me what state you are in I can tell you who your state agency is. Call his attending physician at the hospital he was just released from. It's quite possible that some meds he was put on caused the panic attack. If he starts acting like he did at the mall again (fear, hyperventilating, etc.) take him to either an emergency room or a crisis center.

Laura, We are in California. My husband took him to Urgent Care last night and they took him to the hospital by ambulance. He had drank two 6 packs of beer, and had swallowed 5 anti-depressant pills. He is fortunate that he was found. He could have went into a diabetic coma, or died from an overdose.

Here is the website for the California Department of Mental Health. If you click on "Need Services?" you will find crisis hotlines and county agency information. Contact your county's mental health agency. I work for my county's mental health board (I'm in Ohio). That is the best place to start in order to find services to meet your fil's needs.
