Words of Warning from 200 Years Ago quote:
"A democracy cannot exist as a permanent form of government. It can only exist until the voters discover that they can vote themselves largesse* from the public treasury. From that moment on, the majority always votes for the candidates promising the most benefits from the public treasury, with the result that a democracy always collapses over loose fiscal policy, always followed by a dictatorship." "The average age of the world's greatest civilization has been two hundred years. These nations have progressed through this sequence: From bondage to spiritual faith; from spiritual faith to great courage; from courage to liberty; from liberty to abundance; from abundance to complacency; from complacency to apathy; from apathy to dependence; from dependence back again into bondage." Penned by Professor Alexander Tyler, a Scottish historian, who in 1787 wrote about the fall of the Athenian republic over 2000 years earlier. *largesse - generous bestowal of gifts Prof. Tyler was not talking about the United States when he wrote the above, but it seems we are almost at the end of the line.

I have the source around here somewhere. When I get home from work I can lok for it if someone hasn't already. You can also find this quoted by David Jeremiah in his new book "What in the World is Going On?", and he also used it in his very level-headed End Times Prophecy sermons he just concluded... this one was 3 weeks ago, I think? Go to Shadow Mountain's website or google David Jeremiah and you can listen to it.

ORIGINAL: worthaboverubies Where did you get this quote? It's been floating around in emails for years (particularly around the 2000 election cycle) - and has appeared on these forums before: (see the top of this thread) http://forums.crosswalk.com/m_3914341/mpage_2/key_/tm.htm#3935023 and nobody seems to really have any idea where it came from originally - other than it was not written by Lord Alexander Tytler at any time.

ORIGINAL: worthaboverubies Where did you get this quote? I saw it in Neil Boortz"s The Terrible Truth about Liberals. To keep from typing in from scratch, I searched for "Tyler" and "largesse" and found several sources. I wish I had known the quote had been used in an earlier thread as I would have certainly jumped in.

I remember reading that Ben Franklin used that quote. Wherever it came from here is a reference for the quote. It's interesting to note that this person doesn't provide any links or detailed references either.
