cover the insides with lard (not vegetable shortening) then bake in the oven--not sure how long

I always sprayed mine with cooking spray and let them dry.

I would also let bacon or hamburger grease sit in them overnight.

The easiest way to season it is to use it.

Be generous with your grease at first, because the pan will absorb a lot of it. My first choice for a new pan is to fry bacon in it - there's something about bacon grease that just soaks right in. Keep some low heat on the pan for awhile (or put it in the oven) after you've cooked your bacon. When you clean the pan, use a scrubbie that's safe for nonstick pans (the metal ones will scrape off the coating you're trying so hard to put on it) and dry the pan well. I dry mine by putting it back on the burner for a minute or putting it in the oven if I've got it running.

Next time you use it, spray or coat it generously with whatever oil you're using and let it heat for a bit before putting your food in. Rinse and repeat.

I love cast iron, but it takes a little use to get it properly seasoned, especially for quality cast iron.

Cindybode is right...just use it.

Never put it in the dishwasher, and when you clean it, dry it immediately. I actually use a little spritz of oil and wipe it down with a paper towel to keep it from drying out.

Well seasoned cast iron is almost shiny in appearance, not dripping with oil or grease, but smooth, silky and shiny.

Fry bacon a few times...fry up a chicken or two and you'll be on your way!

Yep! Ya gotta use it! I have my great-grandma's cast iron skillet. I don't know that I "season" it--I just use it. I wash it with dish soap then dry. Usually I'll just put it in the drain rack. My husband likes to put it on the burner but almost every time will forget about it and over heat it. That kills the seasoning! If I'm browning ground beef, I won't use any additional oil. For pancakes, I'll spray it with cooking spray. Oh, and whatever you do, DO NOT soak it with soapy water. For the next week or so, everything will taste like soap!

Grease it up good with some lard. Put it in the oven on very low heat for a few hours.
After that the more you use it the better it will get.
Dont ever let it soak in water to clean it,that will just remove all the seasoning you have done.
I have also used the spray and put it on the stove on very low heat for a long time.

I actually read once not to even use soap but just to spray it out with hot water really well and a plastic scraper. I've been doing that with mine for a while now and everything comes out. If I make something a little sticky I will put water in it while we eat and then everything wipes out nicely.

I got one a few months ago. I oiled it with vegetable oil. Let it sit for a while. Oiled it again and then put it in the oven on low heat.

Then the next few times I cooked bacon or sausage...something fatty on it. The first time they did stick a bit. We got a grill with a cast iron plate on it about the same time and this was in the Weber instructions too (although I think I cooked hamburgers and bacon on it).

Good advice. The only thing I'd add is clean it right away and never let water sit in it or leave it on a counter which may get wet (not by the sink in other words). It's really hard to get the rust rings off afterward.

Well I'm a lot harsher on my cast iron than is recommended, and they've not let me down yet.

The really great thing about cast iron is if they do get rusty (because the seasoning wore off a bit and it got wet inside) all you have to do is scrub them out good with an SOS pad or something like that and re-season. Mine are at the point that all I have to do is rub them down good with oil once they're dry to re-season them.

I do wash mine out with soap, unless I cooked bacon or something that can easily be wiped out with a paper towel. I just make sure to dry it good by putting it in a hot oven or over a hot burner for a couple of minutes.

That's what I do.

One thing that helps is to avoid cooking acidic foods in it before it's well seasoned.
