Hi:

I need about 150 grams of protein. I am trying to embark on a new weight gain diet. Any good meal plans? Peanut butter, milk, dairy, pasta, protein powders, etc., but, not sure beyond that.

It seems, getting 30 grams of protein per meal will not be easy. Any good ideas for cold cereals that taste good and have high protein? Your assistance is appreciated.

Concerto (who wants to get bigger)...

eating yogurt with your cereal will increase the protein value of it.

Kashi's Golean cereal is high in protein (21 grams per 100 grams of cereal...which is about 1 to 1 1/2 cups) and is very tasty. Eating it mixed with 8 oz (1 cup) of yogurt would definately bump up your protein intake.

Do you have any other requirements like low fat or low carb?

Breakfast for me is typically 2 eggs(12 g protein), 1oz cheddar cheese(7 g protein), and couple slices of ham(roughly 15g of protein?). I aim for about 90 g of protein per day because it keeps me from having mood swings. Breakfast is always the hardest meal of the day for me.

You can scramble the above three things together and toss in a handful of spinach for some added nutrition.

Hi Concerto,
I manage to get 125-135 grams a day pretty easily. (I shoot for approx 1 gram a day per pound of body weight.) Once a day I will have a a glass of fat free milk mixed with one scoop whey powder-usually for a snack after a workout.

I just make sure each meal/snack has protein.

Chicken Breasts, Tuna, Egg, Egg Whites, Low fat cheese sticks, Greek Yogurt, Milk, Protein powder, Cottage Cheese, Lean beef and Haddock are all sources of protein I eat regularly.

I seem to recall you talking of wanting/needing to gain weight due to being underweight) a little while ago. Am I right or have I mixed you up with someone else?

If it was you... have you spoken to your doctor to ensure that there are no underlying health reasons why you are underweight?

My Doctor told me that a healthy level of daily protein is to eat half of your weight. In other words, if you weight 150 pounds, you only need 75 grams of protein to be healthy. But if you want to gain weight, I guess you could eat the foods suggested above. I've never had that problem. :o)

Usually, I can get 30g to 45g per serving in.

You can pick a 5# bag up at Costco. They also have MuscleMilk with 26g/srv, but that has a ton of carbs.

teacher-for the average sedentary joe losing lean muscle tissue every year after age 30-that might apply.

For those engaging in regular resistance exercise and trying to actively build muscle-the general rule of thumb is 1 to 1.5 grams of protein per pound of body weight.

Though don't believe everything you read on the net-my rule of thumb is do your own research.

I'm more than happy with the results of my diet and exercise routine. I've gone from a 14 to 6/8, and got my bodyfat into the low 20s. Not bad for a 45yr old mom of 3.

jhupertes-I've read some research that leads me to believe that 30-45gs of protein in one shot is more than the body can absorb at once. If I recall correctly-anything more than 25gs at a shot is wasted as the body cant absorb it.

I use Body Fortress powder-I get it at Wally World. Use one scoop a day with a glass of fat free milk-post workout on lifting days. The rest of my protein intake comes from food.

As you pointed out correctly, it depends on the size of the body. I don't know what a size 6/8 is, but right now my body fat % is around 15.

Depending on my workout, if I do not eat enough protein, I start eating myself.

My body can definitely use it up!

I am on a diet under my physician's care. I have lost 45 pounds in five months, which is kinda slow, but I have Hypothyroidism, RA, and FMS, so I guess it is good considering. I walk for exercise. At first I couldn't walk 1/4 mile without crying from pain, but now I am up to 3 miles a day.

I already knew a lot of information about calories and fat, but he told me to be sure to get enough protein. I asked how much and he said 1/2 of my weight is sufficient for my needs considering my age and that I am exercising everyday (unless it's pouring down the rain.)

As everything else, I guess the proper amount of protein is controversial and also depends on the person's metabolism and such. I'm following doctor's orders and it's working for me so far.

My weight loss is slow, but if I continue to lose 9-10 pounds a month, I will be a very happy, and thin, person by early Spring!!

I would never put "slow" and "loss of 9-10lbs a month" into the same sentence

teacher-9-10 lbs a month seems high to me. You can lose muscle tissue if you lose too quickly and dont get enough protein. Is your doctor monitoring your body fat?

There is a difference between weight loss and fat loss.

But since the OP was asking about a high protein diet and looking to gain-I guess thats a topic for another thread.

jhupertes-Could be that it depends on body size. All I know is I work very hard for my muscle, and I make sure I get enough protein to support that goal. If I cand find that research again I'll link to it.

Eh, no worries. It's not that I don't believe you, just that I might fall outside of the scope of study.

Ok-I took a quick look and couldnt find it. Whatever works, Right? At my age I'm just happy to be adding muscle rather than losing it. It truly is a case of use it or lose it at my age.

Here is a quick guide to protein needs-Obviously a sedentary adult is going to have significantly different needs than a marathoner, who will have different needs than a bodybuilder, who will have different needs than a college athlete...etc etc etc.....

As I stated, I am under a physician's care for this diet and my health in general. He is very pleased with my weight loss and my exercise plan. I feel 100 times better now than I did just 5 months ago. I am moderately active in that I walk, and then work a lot around the house. I may sit a total of 3 hours a day late in the evenings watching TV before bedtime. Otherwise, I am up and at it!

Besides that, you don't know how big I was to begin with. A larger person loses more at the start than a person who only has 20-30 pounds to lose. I'm doing great, thank you! Following his plan (scale for protein - 1/2 of my weight) has worked wonders for my over-all health. I have actually been able to go off of several medications, my blood pressure is a lot lower and he is monitoring my thyroid level to adjust my medication appropriately. I'm happy!

That's awesome!

And perhaps true about a larger person perhaps being able to lose more than the recommended 1.5 to 2lbs a week. I often wondered how they could "justify" the quick weight loss on shows like the biggest loser etc. But then these are folks who have more weight to lose than just trying to nip middle aged spread in the bud, which is where I started really. (Post quitting smoking weight gain was my motivation to get started....)

Has the walking helped the RA? I have a friend with Fybromyalgia and the only exercise her PT and Doc recommends is swimming.

Good job getting off some of the meds and bringing your blood pressure down! I know more than a few folks who have been able to moderate early diabetes and elevated blood pressure with lifestyle changes alone. Amazing how much nutrition and exercise can make to overall well being isn't it?

I feel better @ 45 than I did @ 30. (I'm also a former smoker)

I follow a program I developed myself after spending a ton of time reading and researching nutrition and exercise. I do go for yearly physicals, and my doc is extremely pleased with my results as well. I guess it is just a matter of finding what works for you and sticking with it. (The STICKING part of the equation being the largest key IMO)

Speaking of which-Here I am goofing off on the net when I should be finishing up my pet care and dressing for the gym.

If you're trying to gain a lot of weight, without gaining a lot of fat, you should stay away from carbs (eat some still) and load up on beans instead.
