Instead of honor roll which is based only on grades our middle school has Principal's 100% Club the criteria for inclusion is:

-3.5 GPA or a 1.0 change in GPA
-no unexcused tardies (to class or school) or absences
-no behavior interventions
-overall good citizenship

The budget of the school has been cut, and the program took a huge loss in the budget. I need ideas of items to give the students as rewards EACH quarter.

Last year this is what we did:
1st time inclusion: pencil and one of those rubber bracletts (the kids thought is was hokey).
2nd time inclusion: 100% Club t-shirt designed by one of the teachers. The kids loved it; this year it will take half our budget to do this.
3rd time inclusion: medallion. The kids liked this too.
4th time inclusion: they recieved a certificate for a meal at a local restaurant because they were mailed over the summer.

We thought about a dress down day because they wear uniforms (very strict no just the same colors etc) but they do dress down days for other things and we really want these kids to get something special but cheap .

O.K. bounced the topic off my 8th grader, her suggestions. Go ahead and keep the pencil thing. Second a free period to just goof off. Third, a homework free night. Four, an ice cream party.
Hope it helps some,

At my ds's middle school the kids were rewarded for this sort of thing with what they called a mutual respect party. Basically this was a party for the kids during the last 2 periods of the school day. Those that did not qualify were sent to a study hall in another part of the building and the rest of the kids snacked on treats provided by parent volunteers, played board games or listened to music in the cafeteria, had open gym time in the gym and I think they may have had movie somewhere as well a couple times. They held one of these every 9 weeks or once a quarter. Oh and these kids were also allowed to hang out in the library and study if they wanted too, although I don't know of too many who took advantage of that option.

Blessings,

Garsy

Since the kids loved the t-shirts, why not get iron-on-transfer paper and print the design on them, then give the transfers to the kids so they can put them on the shirt (or bag or pillowcase or whatever) of their choice?

We did that for music & drama camp one year and it worked quite well.

Do more of the gift certificates at restaurants......our elementary school does this, and we have many of our local restaurants tripping over themselves making sure that they get in on the program. (the restauant business around here is VERY VERY competitive, with countless choices......)

The restaurants love it (cause while the student DOES get a 'free meal', it brings in other family members)....and, it's great PR for the restaurant....as they are then "seen" by parents as a place that "supports" the school....

AND, school loves it because it doesn't cost them ANYTHING.

We decided to give them chocolate and a dress down day. One of the teachers created a label to wrap around a Hershey's bar, it is really neat.

You know - I hate the resturant programs because it requires our family to eat there and spend money we don't have it order to enjoy it. The school isn't out any money, but I am because the school wanted to reward one of my kids.

And, the ones that participated were never in the town I like to shop in so added 'err' from me.

I solved that early on. If they get a certificate we pass it on if we can (or pitch it if we can't) and let the kid pick a complete meal and allow soda and dessert. Costs less in the long run.

But I have no ideas that are any better - I may borrow the chocolate idea, although that is contrary to our 'wellness' policy.

well, it works well here...families around here typically eat out 2-4 times a week anyway....sometimes more....so, i guess it just all depends on where you live on whether or not something will work or not.

I'm in the boonies - so you are talking 25 miles to a resturant...

We used to get the book-it things for Pizza Hut and it was always a kids sized meal that wouldn't satisfy my kiddos...Or a regular happy-type meal for a 5th/6th grader. I guess I felt taken advantage of by the reward.

So, what else is there? DeeDee gets pencils with Honor Roll / Principals list / Perfect Attendance put in with the Report Cards but they are the cruddy ones with the hard erasers and don't get used.

Boy, I complain a lot - bad day.

The kids have had reward parties - Pizza parties for the class / grade based on meeting goals and once a semester they are pulled out for something but my kids never go. I think it is Principal's list and my kids always have a B in spelling or writing.

They had a bike rodeo for their AR4 Points last year.

I have seen programs where the points buy gifts, but that isn't what the OP was looking for.

I love the 'progressive' program because you can jump in late or miss a quarter and still get the COOL shirt.

My DD loves hearing her name on the PA and was upset that she MISSED it once (top points for 4th grade and she was at the dr)

well, then, like I said....what works for some schools...may not work for others....
