I just wondered if any of you were involved in Generation Joshua. Some of my siblings are involved and do their student action trips, and my mom wants me to sign up my oldest two to go campaigning in Virginia at the end of the month. Has anyone else done this, and what was your experience?

Well, no replies still, but I've signed them up to go. I think this will be a good learning experience for them. Maybe it will spark an interest in politics in them. I loved being politically active as a kid. This is a great deal for them--they will be there for five days, and all of their expenses are covered. All I have to pay is the cost of joining Generation Joshua, which is $25 a student. They are going to be working hard, though, putting in full days passing out literature and making phone calls.

Can you put a link to the site? I noticed you had one in your blog, but I don't have time to go get it and post it here. I looked at the site and found it interesting. My daughters 15 and 12 would not be interested in it, but it is something I will be thinking about for Mr. Manly. I have a feeling that he will be interested in politics when he gets older.

Sure, Cynthia! It's http://www.generationjoshua.org/dnn/. I only signed up my kids for the two year membership, which is $25 for two years, because I want to make sure they are interested. If they like it, I might get the family membership for $100, which covers all of our kids for 10 years. There's also forums they can participate in and a free civics course for joining. I haven't really had time to check out that Generation Joshua offers, but I think it's something that's going to be worth the money.

I'd be interested in hearing more about your experiences with it. Given that it's connected to Patrick Henry College, I'm suspecting it's ultra, ultra conservative (not just politically, but on a scale of evangelical Christianity, about a 9 out of 10 with 10 being about as "conservative" as one can get). I'm wondering what their perspective is regarding women being actively involved in politics. I noticed from the site that some girls were involved in leadership for local clubs, but all the leadership/speakers are apparently men.

If my memory serves me right, HSLDA (with which Generation Joshua is affiliated) endorsed Palin this last election.

Our homeschool group is probably the total opposite of super-conservative, and they highly endorse and participate in Generation Joshua. I just don't have anything personal to add because my kids are not of that age yet. I do know that the moms involved really like the program.

That's cool! Do you know if any in your group are going on the Virginia trip?

I have one caution on this. Political activism is a good learning experience, however, HSLDA has been known to endorse candidates that fit their particular political agenda but that local activists who actually know the candidates are not supporting. I forget the details now, but a few years back, they decided to put their resources behind a candidate that those of us who were active in local politics and knew the local issues didn't want, and nobody had ever bothered to contact anyone locally before deciding to play king-maker from afar. My recommendation would be to get involved in politics on your local level, have your kids volunteer at the county party headquarters, get to know local candidates and volunteer to campaign for those local candidates.

I'm sure that happens occasionally, but I know in this particular case, from watching promotions about it, that the local people are the ones who asked Generation Joshua to get involved. Also, Generation Joshua's headquarters are located in Virginia where these races are being held, so it would be local to them as well. They don't generally get involved in local races, either. This is an exception because Viriginia is an important strategic state and they believe that this particular race will help indicate the direction the country is heading.

My kids had a great time on the trip. They went down last Friday by bus and stayed in a hotel, and they gave them two $40 gift cards for lunches. During the mornings they would go knock on doors, and then after lunch they would go to the call center and make phone calls, reminding people to vote for Bob McDonnell. After the polls closed in Virginia, there was still an hour to go in New Jersey, so the RNC paid them to work another hour making calls to New Jersey. Then they drove back yesterday and I picked them up yesterday evening and brought them home. The kids were so excited. They talked non-stop about their experiences on the way back, although they were ready to go to bed about eight o'clock last night. They want to go again next year, even though it was a lot of work. They got to go to a rally and afterwards they went to a victory party. Jay thinks he wants to be a politician now. They have had an experience that few kids their age have had or ever will have. They also found that some of the kids on the trip have a Gen J club not too far from us, and they are wanting to join their club. I think they meet once a month.

Well, must not have been my kids then. They made actual calls.

Hmm, something you said just hit me. Did you say that you were recieving recorded calls from Palin and Huckabee asking you to vote for McDonnell? I had read somewhere else that McDonnell didn't want Palin campaigning for him because he was trying to hide his conservative views and appeal to moderates, and that's why he won, therefore the Republicans can't claim Virginia as a victory.

Yeah, I'm pretty sure I remember Palin being one of the calls, about a week before the election...but remember, those don't have to be from the campaign itself, they can be from some other group.
