What are the health benefits of taking coconut oil? Has it helped you personally? How much do you take a day? What do you use it in? Do you take it straight? Do you have any "side effects?" Share your knowledge, advise and experiences here, please!

I use it all the time. I used unrefined organic coconut oil in my cooking (depending on what I'm cooking---I also use evoo and grapeseed oil). I get the refined (because it's cheaper) to use as an after shower moisturizer and hot oil treatment for my hair. I combine it with cocoa butter for a make-up remover. It will even work as a sunscreen. Since I use it as part of an overall healthy lifestyle, it's hard to attribute benefits to that specifically, but I'm the healthiest that I have ever been in my adult life. As part of our Wellness Integrative Nutrition program that Dr. J. teaches he incorporates some info on coconut oil. I'll track that down today and post his recommendations (and it won't even cost you $1200!!).

I know that when I use coconut oil regularly, it helps with the dry skin and rashes I get. I don't always use it regularly though. But there are many claims on different foods that will have an impact on our lives. It's often the way that when we eliminate or introduce certain foods our health improves ~ not necessarily because of the food we've introduced/eliminated but because we're paying more attention to what we are eating.

I use it (the unrefined version like Mona uses for cooking) on my skin as a sunscreen. I couldn't believe that an oil could block the sun instead of attract it, but it works.

I cook with it often. I don't know if we've had any health benefits from it or not, but I believe it is one of the healthiest oils out there. It's just an oil, I'm not sure there are side effects? I use it in baked goods instead of shortening (which I refuse to buy). I only buy organic, virgin coconut oil. My favorite brand currently is Nutiva. I by it in a huge container online... much cheaper than the tiny ones at my local store.

I've used it some this week, but man, does it give me gas! (and some heartburn) Is that because it's helping "clean me out?" (I'm not taking huge amounts or anything, just cooking with it and taking a little on a spoon up to 3x a day) I've also experienced the yeast 'die-off' symptoms with the CO. I lost about 7 inches off of my hair last year after I had gallbladder surgery, and my hair has been very dry and frizzy. Yesterday morning I put coconut oil in it and left in on for several hours. When I washed my hair later in the day it was SO soft! I'll definitely be doing that again. Hopefully, it will help in repairing my hair. I also had a sunburn that was peeling and sore. I've been applying the CO topically for a few days and it is helping so much.

Hopefully, it will help in repairing my hair. You may want to get the cheaper refined coconut oil to do that (if you haven't already). While it's fine for using on the skin, it's not so good in food (stick with the unrefined for that).
