I am older (47) and in my generation tattoos were just not something most people got.
Now it seems that a very large percentage of the younger generation(s) have them.

So what is the attraction to getting one? Are there no better ways to express yourself, ways that are not so permanent?
Which brings up the question: What do you when your values outgrow what your permanent tattoos express?

I am 37, so no huge generation gap. I got one on my arm in 91 that was just to get one. Got another started in 2003 on my back that is still under construction due to the location of the artist (who happens to run a Christian tattoo shop in Nashville)
I like mine, I just wish that I could get it finished!

The tattoo is an artistic scene of Calvary, the sacrifice, and the empty tomb. I doubt I will outgrow that value.

i have tattoos because its the rock n roll thing to do. :P

mine have no real story behind them... just stuff ive brought it and had the artists render up. i like them. i want to have 2 whole sleaves... but they cost money... and so yeah. my wife is wanting a halloween half sleeve, and i am wanting on my arm that is not started yet to have a christmas half sleeve. really jolly, cheery, colorful, and claymation looking. but its just an idea in my head... i have no renderings of anything on that yet.

values, shmallues. i'll get tattoos while it still looks cool on me... when im older... i can just remember the good times of rock n roll.

Hi Tim,

To answer your questions, I got attracted at the fact that it was something I was forbidden to do because I was under 18 before I got my first tattoo. If you come to think about it, it was really the influence of the world which I am ashamed of admitting. Although there's really other ways of expressing yourself through fashion, that time I wanted a permanent expression not being to think it thoroughly. And to answer your last question: now that my values change, the expression I chose to permanently ink on myself represent things that were important to me like family and God so even if I got mines pretty young and even if I do somewhat regret getting them and instead of getting them surgically removed, I've decided on keeping them to remind me that I'm a woman of flaws and in spite of it, God still loves me. So hope that answers your curiosity based on my opinion. Take care and God bless!

I was 22 when I got my first tattoo. I got it because I thought getting it would be "cool". Now I hate it.

I got saved when I was 24. The joy was accompanied by the pain of losing friendships and a fiancee. It was a difficult time. I heard the Jeremy Camp song, "Walk by Faith" which led me to 2 Corinthians 5:7

For we walk by faith, not by sight.

That verse has been very dear to me. About 3 months after I was saved, the two girls who got tattoos with me the first time wanted to get another tattoo. At first I had no intention of getting a tattoo. However, I suppose I still thought it would be cool I went with them and had the tattoo artist design a tattoo for me that says, "Walk by Faith" and has a cross in the background. I had it put on my foot. It has a lot of meaning to me and it is a daily reminder :)

Now I just have to get the one on my back fixed, blech!

My tattoos are of a rose and a Jesus fish with the word Ichthys in Greek written under it, and both represent my love for Christ. I don't think I'm ever going to outgrow my love for Jesus, he's more permanent in my life than these tattoos are.

I'm in my mid-20s and just not into tattoos. Lots of people get 'em in places that are hidden, and I have to wonder if that's really worth much. On the other hand, loud tattoos are out there practically asking for people to look at them. It's just not something I really care to get, considering they'll fade and stretch anyway.

Side note: A cousin of mine got wedding ring tats instead of the physical rings. It seemed like a great idea at the time. Unfortunately, hand tats need occasional touching up and they can also be one of the more painful spots.

At best, I could get a Christ-related tattoo... but meh. It's not the best way to show you're a Christian, IMO. (acting like one is)

thats true. just like the morons who wear witness tee's while throwing down multiple f-bombs and talking about all the females they've been with. you can wear all the 'jesus saves' shirts you want... but if you arent living it... your just wasting your money when you couldve have just been wearing a metallica shirt.

I believe tatoos are wrong!! I mean who is anybody trying to impress by having tatoos? We should be happy the way God created us. HE has HIS reasons why HE didnot tatoo us when HE created us. That is just my point of view. As well as boys braiding their hair and wearing earrings!!!
