The election of 1800 was one of the most difficult ones the country ever had. The first three elections had gone fairly smoothly, but political parties had begun to emerge in 1796. Political parties were already established by the time the campaign began in 1800. Partisan politics was ugly. Former friends were not on speaking terms. The idea was widespread that, if the wrong person got elected, the country was finished. And the issue of godliness or more accurately religiosity was, if anything, worse than it is today. Some newspapers that favored John Adams carried banner headlines reading, "A Vote for Jefferson is a Vote Against God". The scare tactic was that Republicans were dangerous radicals that would take the country over the cliff into mob rule. (This "Republican" isn't the same thing as the party of Lincoln. That's another story). Due to a flaw in the constitution, the electoral vote ended up in a tie between Thomas Jefferson and Aaron Burr. The election had to be resolved in the House of Representatives. Some people were stockpiling weapons outside the new capital, fearing an outbreak of civil war. It all blew over. The USA survived. The constitution got amended. There was no bloodshed. And, eventually, Jefferson and Adams became close friends once again. Why do I raise this now? Because some people may think that the ugliness of politics today is a very recent phenomenon, one that has been unleashed by mass media like TV or anonymous public spaces in the internet. Politics is ugly today, much uglier than I would like. But it was no bed of roses 200 years back!

ORIGINAL: rcjames I agree, maybe we shold bring back duels, Palin would probably win hands down. Thanks RC LOL I was hearing a story similar to this about the Lincoln/Douglas Senate race in the mid 1800's. I think the point to that one was how ugly and downright nasty the press got during that election. It's really not anything new. There've been times in our history when there actually may have been a lot more at stake but it's probably just the nature of it. The beauty of it, as well, is that this system is somewhat self-correcting and no election in this country has really ever come to blows. At the moment, of course, I think if this election goes a different way than what I want, I feel like it would be the end of the world. I think that's how people feel on both sides - and I think both sides are terribly frustrated with anyone in the middle who doesn't feel that way! But, in reality, we'll probably survive regardless...probably. I mean, we survived Bill Clinton - or maybe only history will tell. We'll see.

I wonder if people in the 1800's threatened to move to Canada or Italy like our actor friends do today.

Well, Tom Paine had moved to France, feeling that revolution had played itself out in America, and the the French first Republic was more likely to set the framework for humanity's future. According to Wikipedia, Tom Paine returned to America in 1802 at the invitation of Thomas Jefferson.

There is a rather humorous negative campaign ad based on the statements about Jefferson made during that election here.
