I noticed at our church here in southern mississippi that our A/C unit in our new sanctuary was replaced after only 8 years with a brand new unit.Any A/C people on this forum? To me this sounds like we didnt get a very reliable unit. Any one know what kind of a life span you should expect out of an A/C unit that is mantained properly? DONK

I am not an A/C person. However, an 8 year life sounds woefully short. If it indeed wore out after such a short period of time, I can think of some reasons why it needed to be replaced. 1) Improperly installed. 2) Wrong sized united. 3) Improper or inadequate maintenance. 4) Lightning or other unexpected damage. Those are just 4 reasons I can think of off the top of my head.

Thats not many years.I guess because in this part of the country the A/C is used i am going to say at least 8 months out of the year or more. When i lived in wisconsin we did not have A/C and most of the people i know there do not have A/C.Most of the humidity would stay a couple of weeks and then a cold front would push through from CANADA. Now my daughter who lives just south of GREEN BAY had A/C installed in her house last year. From what i know a heating unit up north should last at least 20 years or more if it is maintained properly. The last house we owned in WISCONSIN had oil hot air unit that was over 20 years old and working fine. Being in the south, I'd say you are talking about a Heat Pump. Since those units all year round, 8 to 10 years is the life span of a unit. Being 8 years old, it also isn't as efficient as new units today.
