I think it's a shame how Christian music manages to erase the memories of so many of it's older artists. While Petra is still a recognizeable name, I'm willing to bet that none of our younger board members remember Bash or Servant, etc.....

I listened to a Servant cassette earlier, as well as First Call as well. I asked a question on a radio-webboard once why aren't there any Oldies Christian music stations? The general answer was that most of the stuff was out of print, however I believe that even with best of compilations that some of the older stuff could still be revived though.

I've always heard people say that there is no such thing as Christian Classic Rock.

For me, this really is the "Classic" era of Christian music. I still enjoy listening to the more "alternative" artists from that time:

The Choir
Daniel Amos
Steve Taylor
Charlie Peacock
Undercover
Vector
Kerry Livgren
Adam Again
Mark Heard
Altar Boys
Ashley Cleveland
Breakfast With Amy
Violet Burning
Leslie "Sam" Phillips
Jacob's Trouble

As well as more rock and/or pop oriented acts:

DeGarmo & Key
Phil Keaggy
Amy Grant
Rick Elias
Rez Band

I know there's lots more - just can't think of any more right now.

Wow, people who know Servant. I love them. I was working at a Christian retreat/camp place one summer as a teenager. They came for the week and got to know a lot of the staff. They even mixed some of their albums there. Then that next school year they gave a free outdoor concert at a park near me. My best friend from working at the camp came up for the weekend. We were front and center for the concert and my friend even got pulled on stage to sing for one of the songs.

ETA: HERE is the album I had and it talks about being at the Camp on the CHesapeake Bay where I worked.

I can surely relate to this thread...nearly all of my Christian CD's come from the mid-'80s through the mid-'90s.

My favorites were / are many of those already mentioned : Phil Keaggy, The 77's, The Choir, Randy Stonehill, Russ Taff, Jacob's Trouble, Mad At The World, Rez, etc. etc.

Currently my favorite Christian artists are Ashley CLeveland and Sara Groves.

I have quite a few Larry Norman discs...now that's classic stuff!

I meant to mention Mad At The World in my first post - just this week I bought four of their early albums (Mad At The World, Seasons of Love, Flowers In The Rain, and Boomerang) on two "2 for 1" sets that KMG put out in the late 90s. I was particularly pleased to finally have the first three albums on CD as I had previously only owned Boomerang in that format. Those CDs will be the soundtracks for my AM exercise in the weeks to come. Can't wait!

And Russ Taff. Has anyone in CCM ever squandered their career in such a huge way as that guy? First, the work he did with the Imperials was (I think) that group's high water mark. Then, his first few solo albums (Walls of Glass, Medals, Russ Taff) were as good as anything anyone was putting out at that time. To watch as he first tried to become Sinatra (his Christmas album) then cross over to country, then end up singing with Bill Gaither - I don't know. Just seems like an incredible waste of an extrodinary voice to me. I'm sure he had good reasons for making the career decisions he made, and I don't mean to be harsh or judgemental. It just frustrated me greatly as a fan to see him go down the path he chose. Oh well.

Yeah, a bunch of the ones already listed.......

........add to them Rick Cua, Whiteheart, Xalt, Halo, Zion, David & The Giants, Eli. (just ones I can think of off the top of my head)

Funny, I was just thinking earlier today about starting a thread titled "When does Christian music get stale?". I can listen to Keith Green "The Ministry Years" anytime, and it is as fresh and interesting as when I first bought it.

Kerry Livgren's A.D.
Time Line, Art of the State, Prime Mover had some good songs.

Plus his first solo album from 1980 called Seeds of Change.
Had some great guest musicians like Ronnie James Dio.

Check out "Through The Forest" by Mad At The World...it came out around '92 or '93, right after "Boomerang". That is, if you can find it! IT's a good one.

I enjoyed Russ Taff with the Imperials, but especially his solo career from around 1987 through 1992, more or less. "Russ Taff", "The Way Home", and "Under Their Influence, Vol. 1" were as good as it gets!

As for his career since then, well, I do confess that I enjoy Southern gospel and get in a "Gaither" mood once in a while...that said, he's no where near as creative or diverse as he once was.

I actually liked his Christmas album, though

Oh wow, there were too many from this time. Margaret Becker was my favourite. I also loved Trace Balin and Kim Hill. Petra was pretty good back then and I remember hearing the Human Song album by First Call and falling in love with them. Rich Mullins and Twila Paris were in a league of their own for music that just had whatever Keith Green had. I got a kick out of the Phil Keaggy album "Sunday's Child". Whitecross was probably my favourite metal band of the time with an excellent singer and guitarist if only they could have kept a rhythym section together. I think Steve Camp's Justice was the first non christian metal album I bought and I had some obscure one's- Force 3, Jerusalem (Dancing on the Head of the Serpent), Rosanna's Raider's, I still remember those. An incredible album I just lost a bid on e-bay for was the Compassion All Star Band - Margaret Becker, Rick Cua, Randy Stonehill, Phil Keaggy and others were on it. I loved the version of Crossroads on it and their cover of The Band's "Christmas Must Be Tonight" is excellent. 88 through 92 was probably my all time favourite for christian music though I love much of what I heard from the '70s.

It's hard to get old christian stuff and it is already a niche market place I can't ever see there being much of a christian classic station unless some kind benevelont rich person makes one and subsidizes it for tax purposes. :(

I like a lot of that stuff ... I think most of it has been mentioned already, but I haven't seen Flock 14, World Theatre, Human Condition or Fluffy / Duralux mentioned.

WOW, this thread is really smoking!

Yes, "You Gotta Get Right or Get Left". and "People All Over The World". Great video too!

You know, Servant was one of the bands cassettes that I recently listened to that inspired this thread. I had listen to First Call's "Human Song" as well, although it seems that the band seems to want to forget about that one now though.

I saw Geoff Moore and The Distance in concert back in the 80's. At the end of his set (he was opening for David Meece I think) he jumped off the stage and said I am just like the rest of you and gave an alter call.

I liked his pre Forefront releases, one simply called "The Distance" which had the songs "Obey" and "Winning Back The Rock". He also did a remake (on an even earlier album) of Larry Norman's "Why Should The Devil Have All The Good Music" also.
